Biography

William Joseph ("Wild Bill") Donovan was an American soldier, lawyer, intelligence officer and diplomat.

Donovan is best remembered as the wartime head of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency, during World War II. He is also known as the "Father of American Intelligence" and the "Father of Central Intelligence".

"The Central Intelligence Agency regards Donovan as its founding father," according to journalist Evan Thomas in a Vanity Fair profile. The lobby of CIA headquarters, in Langley, Virginia, now features a statue of Donovan. Thomas observed that Donovan's "exploits are utterly improbable but by now well documented in declassified wartime records that portray a brave, noble, headlong, gleeful, sometimes outrageous pursuit of action and skulduggery."

On July 11, , President Franklin Roosevelt signed an order appointing William “Wild Bill” Donovan to create America’s first spy agency, which would come to be called the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).

A precursor to the CIA, the agency was divided into branches including Counterintelligence, Special Operations, Research and Analysis, and Morale Operations.

Donovan, a World War I Medal of Honor winner turned Wall Street lawyer, also envisioned a Maritime Unit, filled with expert swimmers who could carry out reconnaissance and sabotage missions by sea. Lt. Col. Donovan personally led the assaulting wave in an attack upon a very strongly organized position, and when our troops were suffering heavy casualties he encouraged all near him by his example, moving among his men in exposed positions, reorganizing decimated platoons, and accompanying them forward in attacks.

He was promoted to brigadier general in March and to major general in November A February 19 article in the Washington Times-Herald revealed his plans for a postwar intelligence agency and published a secret memo he had sent to Roosevelt proposing its creation. When he was wounded in the leg by machine-gun bullets, he refused to be evacuated and continued with his unit until it withdrew to a less exposed position.

Early life

Will, to his parents, attended St Joseph's Collegiate Institute in Buffalo, New York and graduated in He then went to Niagara University and enrolled in Colombia College in New York City where he graduated in with a bachelor of arts degree.

He next enrolled in Columbia Law School graduating in two years and returned to Buffalo to enter the law profession. In he and others organized an Army National Guard unit which was activated in to join General John Pershing at the Mexico border - hunting Pancho Villa.
