ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sami W. Asmar

Sami W. Asmar is a physicist and manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, an experimental radio science co-investigator on several Solar System missions, and a technologist leading institutional initiatives to advance radio and laser link utilization for planetary exploration.

Marco mission biography Early tasks will be to establish that the spacecraft are healthy, stable and commandable. They were able to provide real-time communication relay while the InSight lander was in the entry, descent, landing EDL phase. Each MarCO generates electric power with a pair of photovoltaic panels, and each panel has an area of about 12 inches by 12 inches 30 centimeters by 30 centimeters. The New York Times.

He has been the project scientist for the GRAIL lunar mission and instrument manager or instrument scientist for many NASA and ESA planetary missions. He also served as the supervisor of the Radio Science Systems Group for many years and is currently a manager at the Interplanetary Netword Directorate for the Customer Interfaces Management Office.

He is the current General Secretary, management council chair, and NASA chief delegate to the Consultative Committee on Space Data Systems (CCSDS) composed of member space agencies, 32 observer agencies, and industrial associates.

He invented the Mars Cube One (MarCO) mission and the "Carry Your Own Relay" concept (NASA Inventions and Contributions Board Award NPO Mars Relay CubeSat, ) and formulated follow-on concepts, pioneered "communications by Doppler" for mission critical events and other technologies.

He has published in leading journals and conferences, taught short courses, and often served as a journal reviewer and conference session chair.

He received three NASA Exceptional Achievement Medals for Outstanding execution of the Cassini experiment and verification of Einstein's general theory of relativity (); for Huygens Doppler Wind Experiment (); and for GRAIL Science Implementation ().

The primary mission of MarCO is to test new miniaturized communication and navigation technologies.

He is also the recipient of the Space Ops Exceptional Achievement Medal for creating a system that has transformed space operations during critical events to acquire information indispensable to the safety and health of costly space exploration missions via Radio Science Systems (, Sweden).

His other awards include a JPL Magellan Award, a European Space Agency Award for Outstanding Contribution to Huygens Probe, a Thomas Paine Memorial Team Award for Advanced Human Exploration of Mars, and numerous NASA group achievement awards.
