Folsom inmate confesses to slaying of Lodi teen
Record Staff Writer
In the end, he wanted to see a picture of his mother.
That's what convinced a year-old Folsom prison inmate
to confess to the killing of a year-old Lodi girl whose remains were
found nearly 12 years ago on a Bear Creek bank near Brandt Road.
Investigators from the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said Charles
Alarid agreed last month in a prison interview to tell how he killed Terri
Deschamp if they would dig up an old photo album from an evidence room and
return it to him, complete with pictures of his mother and other relatives.
"I asked him if there was anything I could do for him, no strings
attached, and he wanted his photo album," said Sgt.
John Drummond of
the Sheriff's Office. "He told us if we brought him his photo album,
he would tell us what happened."
Alarid, who began a life sentence in for murdering his wife and
her unborn child, told deputies he took Deschamp for a ride the night of
July 24, , when the teenager disappeared. He said he tried to convince
her to go to New Hogan Reservoir but that she refused and told him she wanted
to go home.
"Then we get into an argument," Alarid told deputies, according
to a transcript of the interview.
"A gun came out . I hit her once;
I panicked, split ."
Alarid told them he left her body at the exact spot where it was found
by dogs digging on the bank more than a year later.
On Tuesday in San Joaquin County Superior Court, Alarid pleaded guilty
to the murder.

term Alarid already is serving, so it will not lengthen his time in prison,
attorneys said.
With little evidence of how she died or who killed her, Deschamp's murder
case was shelved after early investigations turned up no leads.
But at least
one investigator -- Drummon -- made a point to get back to it periodically,
visiting Folsom prison in and to see Alarid, who was one of the
last people to see the teenager alive.
Drummond said Deschamp's murder nagged at him.
"It always ate on me," he said.

not a drug dealer, not somebody who, by her own volition, put herself in
harm's way. She really was a nice girl."
Drummond said Deschamp had left her home in Southern California to return
to Lodi several days before she was killed. She met an old boyfriend, Nathan
Richards, whom she had known two years before at Lodi High School, when
she was living for a short time with her aunt and uncle.
"She was crazy about him," said Terri's aunt, Judy Deschamp,
who was in court in Stockton for Alarid's plea.
Judy Deschamp said it has been a long haul since her niece's death.
After
the girl disappeared, relatives hired a psychic in a desperate and unsuccessful
attempt to find her. After her niece's remains were found and linked to
her by dental records, they were lost in the move from the old Sheriff's
Department facility to the new facility in French Camp.
Deschamp said she is pleased that investigators finally found the person
responsible for Terri Deschamp's death.
"He's one sick person," Deschamp said, referring to the fact
that Alarid also killed his wife, who was eight months pregnant.

Judy Deschamp said her niece moved in with Richards at a motel on Cherokee
Lane next door to Alarid, whom Richards had seen before but did not know.
The night she disappeared, Terri Deschamp had ridden with Alarid to see
Richards at work, where she argued with him.
Later that night, Alarid told
deputies, he tried to convince her to drop Richards and be with him.
Richards, now married with two children and living in Lodi, also attended
the court hearing Tuesday. He said he was grateful the case was coming to
a close.
"It's about time," he said.
Richards himself was considered a suspect for some time, but he passed
a polygraph test and was cleared.
Still, he said, the gossip persisted.
"There were a lot of ugly rumors I had to live with for a long time,"
he said.
Richards said he wants justice in Deschamp's murder because Deschamp
never hurt anyone.
"She didn't deserve to be taken so short in life," he said.
"She had so much to offer."
With Alarid already serving life in prison without the possibility of
parole, his confession to Deschamp's murder will not change much.
Deputy District Attorney Thomas Testa said it is possible that Alarid
could be reclassified within the prison system as a triple murderer, which
could result in a transfer to Pelican Bay state prison, but he said that
would be up to officials with the state Department of Corrections.
